A car explosion in central New Delhi near the historic Red Fort killed at least eight people, started a fire and damaged several vehicles parked nearby, police in the Indian capital said.

Several people were injured. “15 people were taken to Lok Nayak Hospital. Eight of them died before reaching the hospital. Three are seriously injured,” the hospital’s medical superintendent told news agency ANI.

Several emergency vehicles were called to the area. The cause of the explosion is not yet known, but the deputy chief security officer of neighboring Uttar Pradesh said security had been stepped up in sensitive areas of the region.

Indian government officials have not commented on the explosion so far, but local media reported that Home Minister Amit Shah is monitoring the situation.

The explosion occurred around 7 p.m. In front of the Red Fort, one of the most touristy areas in the heart of India’s capital.

The city of New Delhi regularly receives false bomb threats against schools, planes, hospitals and other infrastructure and facilities, causing chaos and disrupting the functioning of services in the capital.

On October 20, 2024, an explosion occurred near a secondary school in the Indian capital. There were no fatalities or injuries, but property damage occurred in the area.
