This Sunday (9th), 61 prisoners were transferred from the Center for Prison Progress (CPP) in Tremembe, in the interior of São Paulo, in an operation carried out by the Rapid Intervention Group (GIR) of the Secretariat of Prison Management (SAP). The action took place after visiting hours and was intended to be a routine search of the unit, according to the SAP memo. Of these, 38 were sent to prison number 1 in Franco da Rocha, 17 to prison number 1 in Tremembe, and a further six were transferred to another prison as they awaited a pre-arranged transfer. The ministry reported that the Tremembe CPP “operated within standards of good order and discipline” and there was no record of obstruction or resistance during the action. The GIR is comprised of correctional officers trained to act in critical, high-risk, or suspected riot situations within São Paulo prisons. This team is called in when rapid intervention is required to restore safety and control to the force. Despite being part of the same prison complex, Tremembe CPP is different from the second prison known for housing notorious prisoners such as Suzanne von Richthofen, the Clavinhos brothers, Alexandre Nardoni, Anna Carolina Jatoba, Elise Matsunaga and former player Robinho. The operation was carried out solely by the CPP.
