A French court on Monday accepted a request to release former Libyan president Nicolas Sarkozy, who was sentenced to five years in prison for criminal association in connection with campaign funds received from the regime of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, under judicial control measures, about three weeks after he entered prison.
In its ruling, the court found that it “considers the request for release to be admissible” before imposing a series of restrictions, including a ban on leaving the country and maintaining contact with those involved in the process, including Justice Minister Gerard Darmanin, who visited him in prison on November 29, the BFM television station said.
The decision came after Sarkozy’s lawyers appealed the sentence and asked the public prosecutor’s office to release him on these conditions, a process that is expected to take place in 2026.The request revolves around the possibility that he will not remain in prison until the sentence is reviewed or the appeals court approves it.
