A court in Celle, Lower Saxony, ruled on Monday that the person responsible for the 2007 disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann can leave Germany again.
The man is a German citizen and can travel within Europe with a national identity card. But other restrictions placed on him after serving time for rape and other crimes remain in effect.
However, the man will still have to wear an electronic ankle bracelet and report to the probation office, as well as a court in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, will decide on the man’s new residency rules.
People could be temporarily banned from leaving Germany or staying in certain regions “to resolve technical issues.” His lawyer had previously appealed the conditions imposed on his client, and also spoke of a “massive campaign of prejudice” during the lengthy judicial process.
McCann was three years old when she went missing during a family vacation from an apartment complex in Praia da Luz, southern Portugal.
