The number of passenger cars with hybrid and electric engines in Spain recorded a significant increase of 21.3% in 2024, reaching 1.24 million vehicles in circulation.

This growth contrasts sharply with the more moderate 3.2% increase for petrol cars and 1.7% decline for diesel cars. The data was collected by UNESCO in cooperation with Tilea and Centro Zaragoza.
As of the end of 2024, ecological vehicles will consist of 855,931 hybrid passenger cars, 230,641 pure electric cars, 152,193 cars equipped with liquefied gas, and 10,674 cars equipped with other alternatives.
In terms of regional overview, electric and hybrid passenger cars have a stronger presence in the Madrid region, accounting for 9.1% of the autonomous vehicle fleet, followed by Catalonia with 5.1% and the Balearic Islands with 4.7%. At the other end of the spectrum, Extremadura has 1.7%, while Galicia and Castilla-La Mancha both have 2.5%. By region, the highest proportion of these vehicles is in Madrid at 9.2%, Barcelona at 5.6% and Castellon at 4.8%.
Four out of five green cars are driven by middle-aged people between the ages of 31 and 65. Analysis of insurance policies reveals that 39.7% of women have green passenger car insurance, which is higher than the 30.7% share of women as regular vehicle owners. To be eligible for insurance, it is assumed that you are a regular driver.
In terms of brands, Toyota leads the alternative electrification segment in Spain, accounting for 37.61% of vehicles in this segment. The next companies with shares closer to 6% or 7% are Dacia, Lexus, Kia, Hyundai and Renault.
Toyota, with its Toyota and Lexus brands, maintains its leadership with 44.33% of electrified vehicles, followed by Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Group and Hyundai Group with 13-14% shares. Two Chinese brands stand out among Spain’s 12 largest electric vehicle manufacturers: SAIC Motor Company (MG) and Geely Holding Group (Volvo, Lynk & Co, Polestar).
