Senate Government Leader Jack Wagner (PT-BA) said this Monday (10/11) that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) needs to meet with Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) before announcing his nomination to the Federal Supreme Court (STF). A former Senate president has also been mentioned, but the favorite is Attorney General’s Office (AGU) Minister Jorge Mesias.
“After President Lula returns (from Belem to Brasilia), probably on Wednesday, he should talk again with Senator Rodrigo Pacheco to announce (the name of the STF). I honestly believe that the name has been announced. I don’t see a reversal,” Jacques told reporters in Belem, where he is attending COP30.
The party chief said the chief executive intends to nominate Pacheco’s name to the Minas Gerais state government next year. “Mr. Lula effectively understands that today’s Sen. Rodrigo Pacheco is a more fit person to run for the Minas state government. So I think the conversation is more about that than about the Supreme Court,” he said.
There were expectations that Lula would announce a name to replace Minister Luis Roberto Barroso’s vacant seat before going to Belem. However, the decision was postponed due to the security crisis in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and because the PT members were scheduled to stay in Brasilia for several days.
Mr. Lula hopes that Mr. Pacheco will participate in next year’s election campaign for the state government of Minas Gerais. The PT, which does not have any executive candidates, faces a delicate situation in the state, which has the country’s second-largest electoral college and is vital to the president’s re-election efforts.
