São Paulo state Governor Tarcisio de Freitas (Republican) said that the state’s public security secretary, Guilherme Delight, would perform “technical work” as rapporteur on the bill to combat organized crime in the House of Representatives.
“Delight is above all a great scholar on security issues,” Tarcisio told a panel at a dinner hosted by Coniv (Brazil-Israel Federation) in São Paulo on Saturday.
Mr. Delight is an accredited federal lawmaker and temporarily returned to office to report on the project. Tarcisio said he plans to leave the office “as long as necessary” to complete the work.
Mr. Delight’s appointment as rapporteur displeased the left and the Lula government, due to the fact that he was a Bolsonarist and a believer in a hard line on crime. The Secretary must also be a candidate for next year’s Senate.
He has already said he intends to make punishments for crimes committed by criminal factions the same as those committed by terrorist groups.
