The death toll from Typhoon Karmaegi’s passage through the country has now risen to more than 200, according to the latest statistics released by Philippine authorities this Saturday, with authorities declaring a state of disaster this week due to the intensity of flooding.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced that 204 deaths have been recorded so far, with the majority confirmed in Cebu Island, located in the Central Visayas region.
More than 100 people are still missing, most of them on Cebu Island. However, according to information from the ABS-CBN television network, the NDRRMC warned that this figure could change as the bodies are identified and search and rescue operations are carried out.
According to estimates from the Department of Energy, after the passage of Karmaegi, approximately 1.4 million homes were left without connection to the power grid, leaving 7 million homes affected.
Additionally, nearly 3 million people have been affected by the typhoon in the country, which is now bracing for the imminent arrival of a new weather phenomenon known as “Fungwon,” which could produce winds of up to 140km/h that can last all day.
It is estimated that the new typhoon could affect a total of 8.4 million people, including about 5.7 million people in coastal areas, government data showed.
