The Brazilian film “The Secret Agent,” which is competing for an Oscar nomination in Brazil, was seen by approximately 274,000 viewers on its first day of release in theaters in the country. ComScore data refers to audience numbers for the past four days, from the film’s U.S. release on Thursday (the 6th) to this Sunday (the 9th).
The film won an award at the Cannes Film Festival for director Kleber Mendonça Filho and performance by Wagner Moura, and is being screened in more than 707 cinemas across the country, in a total of 1,403 rooms. The Brazilian production also recorded the week’s biggest viewership in the country, surpassing “Predator: Wildlands” (241,000 viewers) and “Black Telephone 2” (84,000 viewers).
This means the film has already attracted more than 337,000 viewers. According to data from the National Film Agency Ancine, “The Secret Agent” had 56,000 viewers and box office revenue of 1.36 million reais as of November 2, from various screenings of the movie held in about 300 theaters across the United States at the end of October.
In this way, this film established itself as one of the national productions that attracted the largest number of viewers in movie theaters each year, second only to “Homem com H” (631,000 people). “Victory” (720,000); “Chico Bento and the Mysterious Goiaveira” (986,000). “I’m Still Here” (2.7 million) and “O Auto da Compadecida 2” (2.9 million).
By comparison, director Walter Salles’ film “I’m Still Here,” which won Brazil’s first Oscar this year, opened in 767 theaters on Nov. 4 last year, drawing about 580,000 viewers in domestic theaters in its first week, Incinet said.
The film, starring Fernanda Torres, attracted more than 5.7 million viewers in theaters alone by the time it was included in Globoplay’s catalog in early 2025.
“The Secret Agent” is also being screened in cinemas in Portugal and Germany, co-producers with France and the Netherlands, but there is no data on audience numbers yet. It will be released in theaters in the US on December 5th, followed by a limited release on November 26th, and in France on December 17th.
