União Brasil members leave MBL to ‘celebrate’ new party

The creation of Brazil’s newest political party, Missaão, aligned with the Brazilian Libre Movement (MBL), has been approved by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), meaning that members of the group currently housed in União Brasil will contest elections in 2026 on behalf of the newly established party. União members see the movement as a kind of liberation.

Privately, they admit that there was some discomfort within the party with MBL members. They credit MBL with using the captions for the benefit of the group and receiving resources in the campaign (Please read below) while focusing on creating missions.

“They thank God for eliminating them. They don’t have the votes. They’re just using the party,” a union politician said diffidently. Other party officials consulted for the report also confirmed this assessment.

“The MBL is a separate body within the bench. Unfortunately, we are always plagued by this separation and cannot rely on the bench as a whole. Their departure has reduced the number of united benches, but it is more of a legal reduction than a real one, because in reality we are no longer counted,” said another union lawmaker.

“Good luck”

Among the names expected to change the mission alliance is Congressman Kim Katagiri. (Featured photo)state representative Guto Zacharias, who received 295,000 votes in 2022 and was the eighth highest vote-getter in São Paulo, reached 152,000 votes in the Legislative Assembly (Aresp) election race. Both men will make the switch next year during the party period, six months before elections.

Mission leaders say the idea is to launch names considered most likely to fill executive positions, such as the government of São Paulo or the president of the Republic. The idea is to set up tickets in all states, including those running for government.

fart big cityMilton Leite, former president of the São Paulo City Council and head of the São Paulo union, said that the departure of MBL members was already foreseen and wished the new party good luck.

“I wish the MPs and MPs good luck in their new party. May God light their journey. This is a great opportunity to present their project to the public. We must understand every opportunity for someone to establish a party, it is the rules and within the law. We are aware of this and agree with it,” Leite said.

high flight

Renan Santos, founder of MBL, is a candidate for the Palacio do Planalto. Kim may run in the Palacio dos Bandeirantes election, but in São Paulo he will be free to apply for whatever he wants.

Guto Zacharias should run for Congress. In the case of Aresp, the mission operates under the names of Rafael Minatogawa, current deputy mayor of Villa Mariana, São Paulo, and Renato Batista, MBL’s national coordinator and deputy provincial mayor.

The party still hopes to field city councilor Amanda Vettrazzo as its candidate for São Paulo’s Senate seat. However, members of Congress face an obstacle called election law. As a City Council member, she does not have a party window to run in the 2024 election. To leave the party without losing his mandate, he must obtain a letter of recognition from Brazilian Unity.

  • In 2022, Kim Katagiri’s camp received 1.1 million reais from União Brasil.
  • Guto Zacharias received approximately 700,000 reais.
  • For the 2024 local elections, Amanda Vettrazzo received R$1 million from the party.
  • Renato Batista received over 700,000 reais from the coalition as campaign funds for his election to the city council of São Paulo, but lost the election.

“Bucherization”

Renato Battista, MBL’s national coordinator and the mission’s treasurer, said the new party will carry a hard line on security as one of its main banners.

He said the party was inspired by Salvadoran President Nayib Boucle, known for adopting harsh and controversial measures to combat crime, including derogations and mass incarceration statutes. This action caused much criticism from human rights activists.

“What we defend is the same model of ‘Buquerization’ in Brazil that took place in El Salvador, with the construction of mega-prisons, a formal declaration of war on incarceration and crime. And, of course, in addition to other issues that have already become classics of MBL: defending national reform and having a more efficient state along these lines,” Batista said.

The party claims to be “programmatically” opposed to the current status quo on a partisan and electoral basis. However, the 2023 MBL Congress came to the understanding that it makes no sense to return campaign funds.

“Because once this resource is not used, it can go back to the federal government or be shared by other political parties. So it makes no sense for us not to use it. We are giving the little ammunition we have to the opposition. Now, By design, I don’t think campaign funding should exist the way it is today. Absolutely, I will defend campaign funding cuts. Congressman Mission will always defend campaign funding cuts. It can’t be on the scale it is today,” Batista defended.
