Acting President Carlos Mazon painstakingly recounted a phone call he made on the afternoon of October 29, 2024, the day of the disaster that killed 229 people. However, it is unclear what other communications he had with journalist Maribel Villaplana that day while he was at El Ventro restaurant. Specifically, WhatsApp, a popular instant messaging application. Villaplana told the judge that Mazon was “always on his cell phone,” according to the Nov. 3 deposition minutes accessed by elDiario.es.
While she put her cell phone away, the president placed the device on the table and answered the call, which the communicator couldn’t hear.
“Do not forget that above all he WhatsApped and wrote messages,” a recording of Villaplana’s remarks is shown.
The witness did not hear the phone calls Carlos Mazon had with then-Minister Salome Pradas and the presidential team. In any case, “he believes that Mazon listened more than he spoke.”
When asked by the lawyer about one of the accusations, the witness admitted that the court president “had a written conversation. She does not know what he wrote, if not through WhatsApp,” according to the minutes of the statement.
Former city council member Salome Pradas voluntarily contributed to the movement a notarized transcript outlining her call for Dana on the day (reprinted in full by this newspaper). However, it did not provide anything about messages on WhatsApp, SMS, and other messaging applications.
On the contrary, former Regional Emergencies Secretary Emilio Argueso provided an expert report on his calls and WhatsApp messages.
