French President Emmanuel Macron met with farmers this Wednesday (12 November 2025), and Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard said the draft agreement between the European Union and Mercosur “will, as it stands, get a firm no from France.”
“France is currently unable to verify the draft agreement with Mercosur countries (…) because it does not protect the interests of our farmers,” said Genevard, who also took part in the conference in Toulouse, southern France.
“It is unacceptable that products and food products are produced on European soil or imported that do not respect the rules we impose on our own producers,” the official said.
On Wednesday, around 300 farmers asked President Macron for clarification on the free trade agreement with Mercosur (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay), after President Macron last week stated that he had positive prospects for signing the agreement.
“Today, the president has promised not to sign Mercosur until it includes the provisions that must be implemented,” said Jean-Marie Doria, president of the Federation of Regional Agricultural Employers’ Associations (Frsea), which opposes the entire treaty.
