BBC apologizes to Donald Trump for episode of show panorama It edited excerpts from the US president’s speech, but rejected demands for compensation.
The company also said it would no longer broadcast the program in question.
The apology came after the Daily Telegraph published a second excerpt, edited in a similar way, that was aired on the show. news nightalso from the BBC, In 2022.
A spokesperson for the company said: “BBC lawyers have written to President Trump’s legal team in response to the letter we received on Sunday.”
BBC Chairman Sameer Shah also sent a separate letter to the White House expressing regret that he and the BBC had edited the President’s speech on January 6, 2021, which was aired on the program.
The BBC has confirmed that it has no plans to rebroadcast the documentary on any of its platforms.
“The BBC deeply regrets the way the video was edited, but strongly disagrees that the defamation claim has merit,” the company said.
“We will walk to the Capitol and applaud our brave members,” President Trump said in a speech on January 6, 2021.
“And we will fight. We will fight with all our might,” he said in the same speech more than 50 minutes later.
In the program panorama An excerpt from 2024 shows him saying, “We’ll walk to the Capitol…and I’ll be there with you. And we’ll fight. We’ll fight as hard as we can.”
President Trump said in an interview with Fox News that his speech was “distorted” and that the way it was presented “misled” the public.
The BBC received a letter from Mr Trump’s lawyers on Sunday.
The document called for a “full and fair retraction” of the program, an apology and for the BBC to “appropriately compensate President Trump for the harm caused”.
The deadline for the BBC’s response was 22:00 GMT (19:00 in Brasilia) on Friday (14 November).
