Islam Makhachev’s UFC welterweight debut will be a title fight. This Saturday (15th), the Russian will take on Jacques Della Maddalena in the main event of UFC 322 in New York for a chance to win his second UFC title.
The organization’s former lightweight champion will be another one to take on the difficult task of joining those who have achieved double champion status. But to do so he will have to beat the Australian who has ousted Belal Muhammad from the top spot in the division, and he believes it will be a difficult battle.
Speaking at UFC 322 media day, Makhachev said this weekend’s fight will be the “hardest of my career” and the “biggest test” of his life as a mixed martial artist. Because in his MMA career, he has the chance to face champions from different divisions in different situations.
– This is the biggest battle of my life. The biggest test will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York. This will be the most difficult test. But I’m ready… Jack is top three, he’s the champion, he’s one of the best fighters I’ll fight. If you’re a UFC champion, it’s a sign you’re at a high level, the Russian said.
Makhachev took the opportunity to evaluate Jacques Della Maddalena, praising the Australian for both his positioning and the former lightweight champion’s main strength: the ground. But the Dagestani warrior believes he has what it takes to win and make UJ ultimate history.
– Jack is very good. I saw him fight Belal and other men. He is excellent in every way. He’s very good at hitting, but I watched his wrestling and defense on the ground. He won’t be surprised if someone drops him. He feels good, but I know I’m better – he declared.
