Madrid November 12 (Europe Press) –
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday thanked President Donald Trump for his “incredible” support after the president sent a letter to his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog, asking him to consider the possibility of pardoning the country’s head of government in a corruption case.
“Thank you, President Trump, for your incredible support. As always, you get straight to the point and tell it like it is. I look forward to continuing to work together to strengthen security and consolidate peace,” Netanyahu said in a short statement posted on his profile on the social network X.
This is not the first time President Trump has advocated for a pardon from Prime Minister Netanyahu. During a visit to the country last October, the New York tycoon downplayed the fact that the Israeli president had accepted gifts from the billionaire and pressed for the measure to be adopted.
The White House tenant said he was surprised that the Israeli leader has been involved in a “politically motivated” trial since 2020, and described the crimes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is accused of as “unwarranted charges intended to cause him great harm.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s trial began in May 2020 and focuses on three separate corruption cases in which he faces charges of fraud, breach of trust and bribery. The most serious of these, known as Case 4000, alleges that the prime minister used his position to benefit major shareholders of telecommunications giant Bezeq in exchange for favorable coverage on popular news sites, a charge he denies.
