Club releases official statement after Jordonny was called a ‘monkey’
São Paulo issued an official statement on Wednesday (12/11) strongly denying any acts of racism. In fact, this incident occurred against a player from the U-20 team, Jordony. The accusation of racial insults occurred during a match against Fortaleza at Ceará’s Presidente Vargas Stadium. This match was valid for the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Cup in this category.
The confusion began in the 26th minute of the first half. At the time, Sao Paulo players accused the Fortaleza player of calling Giordny a “monkey”, according to SporTV broadcasts. In response to the complaint, referee Paulo Vitor de Lima Pereira immediately stopped the match for about five minutes. In fact, the judge even applied the anti-racism protocol. However, play resumed shortly thereafter, and neither player received a card for this incident.
Andrade, a defender from Sao Paulo who is still off the pitch, demanded a tough attitude. The defense attorney admitted that he did not hear the racial insults, but his colleagues could hear them.
“I can’t accept any more. I have to get out of here and go to the police station. We have to assess the situation as soon as possible,” the player told SporTV.
In response, the club promised to support the player and take appropriate measures.
In fact, São Paulo quickly took a stance on the incident. In a statement, the Tricolors expressed their support for the players and promised to take necessary measures in the face of what they described as an “abhorrent act of discrimination.”
