The story of Angela Diniz, a socialite from Minas Gerais who was murdered by her boyfriend in the 1970s, will be shown in a new version starting this Thursday (11/13). The HBO Max series “Angela Diniz: Murder and Blame,” directed by Andrucha Waddington, looks back at the later years of the socialite’s life and shows how her story reflects the dilemmas of women’s freedom and gender violence in Brazil. The plot was inspired by a podcast Bones Beach.

  • Ángela Diniz was a popular socialite from Minas Gerais, distinguished by her beauty, independence, and lifestyle that deviated from the standards of her time.
  • In 1976, she began a turbulent relationship with Raul Fernando, a businessman from Amaral Street, known as Doca Street.
  • On New Year’s Eve of that year, Doka shot and killed 32-year-old Angela four times after an argument.
  • The crime was widely reported and caused a national uproar, especially during Doka’s trial.
  • The businessman’s defense claimed a “just defense of honor” and Doka received a light sentence after committing the crime.

Angela, played by Marjorie Estiano, is portrayed as a woman ahead of her time: free, passionate, and willing to break paradigms. “It was a great challenge and an honor to play this character because female characters are not made to feel pleasure,” the actress said at a press conference.

According to Marjorie, she felt a personal connection to the series’ themes precisely because it deals with gender violence. “I have not only suffered, but I will continue to suffer. We must continue to create laws to protect women,” she added.

In the story, Angela decides to leave her husband and seek her own freedom, something that was unthinkable for many women at the time. This decision causes her to face social judgment and a difficult relationship with Doca Street, where Emilio Dantas lives.

The actor defined his character as a portrait of masculinity that remains and said that if the crime had happened today, Doka might have been in parliament or an influential figure. “He is a man who lives off image, status and vanity. He is someone who wants attention,” he added.

Emilio emphasizes that it is necessary not only to look at the situation of women in the past, but also to compare it with the present. “It’s important to understand who this Angela is today. She will be further slaughtered on the internet. It’s not just a journey from there to here, but a journey from here to there,” he added.

The incident occurred 47 years ago, but it is still going on today.

Director Andrucha Waddington emphasizes that reexamining this case is essential to understanding the present, precisely because it contains debates that are still being debated today. In fact, one of them was “legitimate defense of honor”, which would have facilitated a lenient sentence for Doka after the crime, but it will no longer be accepted only in 2023.

“Legal defense of honor was put on paper in 2023, 47 years after the crime. This proves how current the debate is. We think things have changed, but there is still a lot that needs to change. Angela was murdered twice, the second time in court,” Andrucha stressed.

Another thing the series team was mindful of when working on the script and production was giving protagonists to the stories of the victims and Angela. “We were careful not to make tragedy into a spectacle. This series is about the murdered woman, not the murderer. If we had wanted to explore the scandal, we would have given Doka Street more space, but we didn’t do that,” he pointed out.

As for Renata Rezende, Director of Fiction Production at Warner Bros. Discovery, the purpose of the series is to provoke discussion and reflection, in addition to encouraging discussion on a subject that has seen little progress since then. “This is a real crime, a series of trials, not only from the legal side, but also from the point of view of our sentences. It is a series of cases that will make us analyze everything, and even after 47 years, we will be horrified,” he stressed.

Also starring Antonio Fagundes, Thiago Lacerda, Camila Mardilla, Yara de Novaes, Telmo Fernández, Renata Gaspar, and Joaquín López, Angela Diniz: Assassinda and Condenada will be a six-episode series that will air weekly on HBO Max and HBO. The first two episodes were released this Thursday (11/13).
