Spain congratulated the Iraqi government and people for the “organisation, participation and good development” of the November 11 parliamentary elections. In this parliamentary election, the coalition government led by Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani won the most votes.
Secretary José Manuel Alvarez said in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that his government congratulated this Tuesday’s electoral process for Iraq’s parliament and hoped to “form a government quickly” upon learning the results.
“Spain reiterates its commitment to the stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq and its willingness to continue to cooperate for peace and stability in the region,” the government said.
According to provisional results released by the Independent High Electoral Commission on Wednesday, the coalition of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani won the most votes in this week’s elections, representing 99.74% of the votes counted.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by President Nechirvan Barzani of the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, came in second place with about 1 million votes. According to Kurdish media outlet Rudaw, the election commission confirmed 56.11% participation, an increase of 12 points compared to the 2021 elections.
