US President Donald Trump signed a bill this Thursday morning (11/13) Brasilia time guaranteeing federal funding for fiscal year 2026, ending the longest shutdown in the country’s history that lasted 43 days and partially paralyzed some public services.

“I’m honored to sign this great bill and get our country working again,” President Trump said. “With my signature, the federal government will resume normal operations, and my administration, along with our partners in Congress, will continue to work to reduce the cost of living, restore public safety, and make America affordable again for all Americans,” he added.

The proposal received 222 votes in favor and 209 votes against in the House of Commons. The deal was reached between Republican lawmakers and a group of centrist Democrats. Six Democrats supported the document, while two Republicans opposed it.

Previously, the proposal had already passed the Senate on Monday (October 11), receiving the minimum 60 votes in favor and 40 votes against to proceed to the House of Commons for consideration.

crisis in usa

  • The US government has been shut down since October 1st. This is because the North American Congress could not reach an agreement on the annual budget.
  • In practice, this meant that the federal government was paralyzed, directly affecting the functioning of several public services in the country.
  • As a result, thousands of federal employees will lose paychecks or be laid off.
  • The current closure is the longest in U.S. history. The 43 days ended this Wednesday (12/11).
  • The longest previous shutdown occurred from December 2018 to January 2019 during President Donald Trump’s first term, lasting 35 days.

The project, which was approved after several weeks of negotiations, guarantees financial resources for the government to function until January 30, 2026. Until then, Congress needs to vote on a new budget to prevent another government shutdown early next year.

The proposal would also prevent President Trump from laying off workers until that date and ensure that the SNAP food assistance program, which is responsible for serving millions of vulnerable families, continues through September 2026.

This agreement caused a split in the Democratic Party. Opposition members criticized this understanding and even called for the resignation of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for allowing the proposal to move forward with bipartisan support.

The biggest sticking point in negotiations is the exclusion of federal funding for health care, which was excluded from the new budget. The program expires at the end of December.
