The album Selvagem?, released in 1986, is considered a milestone in Pararamas do Sucesso’s discography and the history of Brazilian rock. The album changed the perception of the band, who were no longer seen as “a toothless version of British group the Police” by incorporating aspects of black music and Africa, particularly reggae.
Wild release? This incident occurred in a critical social and political context in Brazil in 1986, during the early stages of re-democratization. The album succeeded in breaking the barrier between MPB and rock by incorporating indigenous rhythmic influences such as reggae, dub, ska, and even samba and the sounds of northern and northeastern Brazil.

The album is notable for containing songs of a social nature, with relatable and direct lyrics, which became hits. For example, the track “Alagados” exposed the country’s social rifts by linking the suburbs of Rio, Bahia and Jamaica, based on a powerful composition jointly developed by Herberto Viana, Bi Ribeiro and Joan Barone. “Only a Novidade” was not composed by the trio, but by Gilberto Gil, who strengthened the political overtones of the piece.
Other songs, such as the title track, which is perhaps the most rock-heavy song on the album, deal with dense themes such as police brutality, racism, and lack of freedom. Still, the album maintained its generational irreverence with the lighter song “Melo de Marinheiro.”
Wild recording? The event was held after a period of rest as Joan Barone recovered from a traffic accident. The album sold 100,000 copies in its first week and became a great example of how lyrics, melody, arrangement, and innovation can come together.
Forty years later, Os Pararamas do Sucesso continues to celebrate this timeless and powerful legacy with the “Celebration 40 Years of Classics” tour, which will be presented at the Festival Estilo Brasil in Brasilia on November 21st.
The Estilo Brasil Festival is organized by Banco do Brasil Estilo and supported by the Federal Government, BB Visa Card and Banco do Brasil. The realization of this is big cityOh! art.
