Eduardo Bolsonaro reacts to Moraes vote: ‘Witch hunt continues’

Deputy Prime Minister Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL) reacted to Minister Alexandre de Moraes (STF) who voted to accept the complaint from the Attorney General’s Office and make him a defendant for coercion in the proceedings.

In a telephone conversation with Column this Friday (November 14), Eduardo Bolsonaro labeled Moraes’ vote as a “continuation of the witch hunt,” using the same terminology adopted by US President Donald Trump to refer to Jair Bolsonaro’s trial.

“This is a continuation of the witch hunt and is completely unconstitutional. Mr. Moraes claims to be a victim of coercion, and yet he is judging me. Just as he is accusing me, (Republican Attorney General) Paulo Gone has been sanctioned with the revocation of his American visa and is colluding with human rights violator Alexandre de Moraes in a marked card game.”

Eduardo Bolsonaro also questioned formal aspects of the process, claiming his name had not been properly cited. It argued that the decision to apply the Magnitsky Act against Mr. Moraes was made by the U.S. government.

“Despite it being well known that I live in the right place and that I am known to the American authorities, I was not officially named. Mr. Moraes said that the Magnitsky Act is clearly a law approved by the United States Congress, so it is open to charges of coercion for acts and lawful acts committed by President Trump outside of Brazil’s jurisdiction.”

The lawmaker insists he was not acting to change the course of the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of a coup, but to punish authorities for human rights abuses.

“Nor was my work aimed at exonerating my father, as I would not expect a fair verdict from an exceptional court of inquiry. Therefore, my energies have always been focused on bringing consequences to the notorious human rights violations and abuses committed by Mr. Moraes.”

2026 Election

Eduardo Bolsonaro also accused Moraes of trying to eliminate his critics, who plans to run in the 2026 Senate election.

“Therefore, there is no evidence of the commission of a crime of coercion that exposes the political persecution I am undergoing for practicing international legislative diplomacy. In other words, Mr. Moraes wants to remove me on the carpet from the 2026 elections. Since it is senators who will vote for the impeachment of STF ministers, so will any favorite Senate candidate whom Mr. Moraes considers an opponent.”

“I would like to emphasize that I am making this statement based on what has appeared in the press, as I was not informed of any conduct during this process.” “Mr. Moraes chose to try me in absentia. Why is Mr. Moraes afraid of me speaking? Why doesn’t he use the official channels, as judges around the world do?” concluded the licensed attorney, who currently resides in the United States.
