The 2026 F1 season began to take shape this Friday (14 November) after the FIA met its category committee in London to discuss a package of regulatory adjustments. These proposals await final approval from the World Motor Sport Council, scheduled for December 10th.
The most controversial topic at the meeting was the possibility of introducing two mandatory stops per race. The idea comes with another change that would require drivers to use all three tire compounds during the GP. However, the group preferred to continue evaluating alternatives throughout 2026.
The beauty of the car was also on the agenda. Proposals submitted predict that from next year at least 55% of the sides and tops of single-seater seats will be painted or stickered, as a way to reduce visible carbon excess and make each team more distinguishable.
A committee set up by the FIA also discussed relaxing rules prohibiting drivers from changing their number plates. This change would allow for career-wide changes that have been prohibited since 2014.
Adjustments to the pilot cooling system (DCS) were also evaluated. The group is considering standardizing the use of equipment, redesigning clothing and expanding vehicle weight tolerances to encourage adoption. We plan to consult with pilots before any countermeasures are taken.
All proposals will now be finalized at the World Motor Sport Council meeting scheduled for December 10th.
