Even with the cuts, Brazil still faces a rate of 40% of the US. understand

Even though Donald Trump withdrew from the tariff war this Friday (11/14) by removing agricultural products from the list of U.S. government-imposed tariffs that directly benefit Brazil’s exports of items such as coffee, beef, and fruit, Brazil remains one of the countries most affected by the Republican-imposed surcharges.

The executive order signed by President Trump and released by the White House only reduces the 10% reciprocal tariff imposed by President Trump on April 2 of this year. However, the 40% additional rate officially decided at the end of July remains in effect.

As a result, 73.8% of Brazil’s exports to the United States will remain subject to additional tariffs, according to a technical note from the Confederation of National Industries (CNI). By the time reviews were published this Friday, that percentage had reached 77.8%, covering 6,037 products.

According to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce Services (MDIC), chemicals, plastics, industrial machinery and auto parts are among the most affected. For most of these items, the final rate is close to or reaches 40%.

According to the North American government, the 10% reduction announced this Friday has retroactive effect and came into effect at 12:01 this Thursday (November 13).

Trump’s justification

In his executive order, President Trump justified his decision by saying he had received “additional information and recommendations from various authorities.”

“After considering the information and recommendations provided by the authorities, the progress of negotiations with various trading partners, the current domestic demand for certain products, and the current domestic production capacity for certain products, we have determined that further changes to the range of products subject to reciprocal tariffs imposed by Executive Order 14,257 are necessary and appropriate,” he said in a statement.

The move was announced a day after Brazilian Prime Minister Mauro Vieira and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in Washington. During the meeting, the two diplomats discussed resolutions on tariffs.

After the meeting, Vieira said a “general proposal” to address interest rates had been delivered to North American representatives. The prime minister also said the two countries hope to conclude an initial agreement by early December.
