A jury court this Friday (14th) voted by a majority to acquit Lieutenant Enrique Otavio Oliveira Veloso, who was charged with the murder of fighter jet Leandro Roo in 2022.
Seven jurors, five women and two men, participated in the so-called sentencing panel. The verdict was handed down by Judge Fernanda Giacomini of the First Jury Court.
The jury began this Wednesday (12th) at the Barra Funda Criminal Forum in the West Zone.
In an earlier interview, attorney Claudio Daredon, who is representing the officers, said his client acted in self-defense.
According to the São Paulo Court of Justice, release permits have already been issued for police officers who were detained preventively (indefinitely).
The jury was suspended by the court in May. The move was in response to a request from Veloso’s defense attorneys. The defenders filed a lawsuit with the magistrate presiding over the First Jury Court, which was accepted by Judge Marco Antonio Cogan.
According to the lawyers, “On the eve of the trial, the judge unilaterally decided to exclude the defense’s technical assistant, who had been allowed to participate in the trial in advance.” One of them would be an expert hired by the defense. They believed that there could be imbalances in the performance of tasks.
The jury was rescheduled for August. However, due to differences of opinion between the prosecution and defense on the new schedule, the meeting was disbanded a few hours after it began. The trial is scheduled to begin this week.
incident
Mr Low was 33 years old when he was murdered in the early hours of August 7, 2022. Lo was attending a show by the pagode group Pixote at the Esporte Club Sirio in Planalto Paulista when he was shot in the head by Lieutenant Veloso.
Investigation revealed that the police officer left the scene and went to a brothel. He then accompanied me to a motel on the waterfront in Pinheiros. He surrendered to the Prime Minister’s Interior Ministry that same evening.
Ivan Siqueira Jr., a lawyer for the militant’s family, said witnesses at the time of the attack said the disagreement began after a man entered Lo’s circle of friends, grabbed a drink bottle and started shaking it. At the same time, the man will look at the fighter in the form of a provocation.
If he had done that, Law would have pushed the man down and made him unable to move. Other people approached to break up the fight, but there was no aggression, according to a witness report obtained by the family’s attorney.
The man then pulled out a gun and shot the fighter once in the head, striking the victim in the forehead. Colleagues of the world champion said the attacker kicked Law twice in the head as he lay on the ground.
