President Lula has warned allies in recent days that he will not bow to pressure from the Senate and will stand by his decision to appoint Union Attorney General Jorge Mesias to the STF.
Throughout the week, senators sent a series of warnings to the Planalto Palace that they would not receive enough votes today to confirm Mr. Mesias’ nomination in the Senate.

One such warning, Senate leaders said, was the narrow reappointment of the Republic’s attorney general, Paulo Gone, by the House of Representatives.
Gone, who was targeted by the right after criticizing Jair Bolsonaro over the coup investigation, approved his reappointment by a narrow margin of 45 to 26, the narrowest score in the PGR’s history since re-democratization.

Lula calls Gonet.
Today’s Senate leadership’s preferred name for the STF would be Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). But Lula wants the senator to be a candidate for the Minas government in 2026.
“It may be tough. It may take time. But it will be a lifesaver,” a government official with a position in Lula’s office told Column, with reservations.
What do Messiah’s allies think?
As the column showed, Mesias’ allies saw a “good” team in the close game Gone faced. For this group, this indicates that the AGU head may have even more votes than the prosecutor.
“In fact, it was good. If Mr. Gone, who condemned Bolsonaro, is recognized, then the Messiah will also be recognized,” one of the minister’s interlocutors told the column.
Messias’ allies say he should receive more votes than Gonet because he has the support of evangelical senators — Lula’s choice for the STF.
