The wife of philosopher Noam Chomsky denied this Saturday that she brokered a call between Jeffrey Epsetain, an American businessman convicted of sex crimes, and current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in 2018. This was revealed in an email purported to be from a billionaire and made public by the US Congress.
Valeria Chomsky told CNN Brazil that the allegations were “false” and that she witnessed a visit by a linguist while the PT members were imprisoned at the Federal Police Supervisory Station in Curitiba. She said her phone was left behind at reception.
The Communications Secretariat of the President of the Republic (SECOM) also denied that such a call took place. During the message exchange, Epstein said: From prison. What a world! ” In another document, a businessman who committed suicide in prison in 2019 refers to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as “that guy.”
“As Noam Chomsky’s wife, I joined him on a visit to President Lula in prison on September 20, 2018. We had to leave our cell phones at reception and were searched by federal police before we could begin our visit. “We make clear that (…) any allegations that there were phone calls between President Lula and his interlocutors, mediated by Noam Chomsky, during the visit or on any other occasion are baseless and untrue,” she said in a note.
Valeria Chomsky, a Brazilian, said her husband suffered a stroke in 2023 and was still recovering, so she could not talk about the episode.
The contents of the emails were made public after the House Oversight Committee released email exchanges between Mr. Epstein and other prominent figures, including Mr. Epstein’s former partner Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently in prison on sex trafficking charges, and author Michael Wolff, author of a book about Donald Trump.
The email exchange also mentions the President of the United States. At one point, he claimed that Jeffrey Epstein was “the only person who can bring down Trump” and implied that Republicans knew about his criminal activities.
Trump and Epstein were friends for about 20 years in the 1990s and 2000s, but reportedly broke up in the mid-2000s. Republicans quickly distanced themselves from the billionaire as soon as the allegations first surfaced, and say the matter was never formally investigated.
During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised to release classified documents related to the incident when he returned to the White House. But the now-president has labeled the alleged Epstein client list a “hoax” and “bullshit” and blamed “radical leftists” for spreading the rumor.
