Russia and Ukraine say “sooner or later we will be forced to negotiate” to end war

Kremlin Spokesman Dimitry Peskov said that according to the current developments in the conflict, Ukraine’s position in any negotiations is worsening day by day, and the passage of time will have a negative impact on the conditions under which Kiev will be forced to enter negotiations. According to Russian news agency Interfax, Peskov argued that Ukraine would eventually be forced to negotiate an end to the war, and the longer it waits to resort to this route, the worse off it will be.

In a recent statement, Peskov asserted that the current position of the Ukrainian government represents, in his words, “a formalization of the situation with no intention to maintain contacts or continue negotiations,” Interfax reported. The statement was accompanied by fresh accusations against Kiev for the lack of progress in the dialogue process, reiterating that Ukraine’s resistance at the talks would have prevented any progress.

The presidential spokesperson also noted that in the absence of an open path to dialogue, the Russian government will continue its military offensive using all available resources in what it calls “special military operations.” “Since it is impossible to continue the talks, we will continue special military operations with every effort to achieve the goals set by the Supreme Commander,” Peskov said, according to Interfax news agency. The official stressed that the main focus at the moment is ensuring future security and fulfilling the mission set by the Russian leadership.

In a statement compiled by the agency, Peskov reiterated that the Russian government is open to a political and diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict. He asserted that Russia wants to achieve what he called “genuine peace” through non-military means, but stressed that given Ukraine’s alleged lack of appetite for dialogue, Russia continues to prioritize its military path. “Russia wants true peace,” the spokesperson said, noting that Kremlin authorities believe that the closure of political and diplomatic channels was caused by a decision by the “Kiev regime.”

Interfax also elaborated on Peskov’s statements regarding the purpose of Russia’s attack. The spokesperson said that ensuring next-generation protection on Russian territory ranks as one of the central motives of the current military strategy. According to Peskov, the continuation of the operation is a response to the lack of alternatives in the current environment, given that all avenues of negotiation have been blocked by the Ukrainian authorities.

The Kremlin’s official position, reported by the agency, is that Kiev is to blame for the stalled negotiation process. The spokesperson’s statement reiterated that the responsibility for the lack of progress lies with Ukraine, and expressed that the Russian government is ready to resolve the conflict by peaceful means as long as such conditions exist, although it believes that such conditions do not exist in the current operational and diplomatic situation.

Throughout his interactions with the media, Peskov emphasized the Kremlin’s view that time is against Ukraine’s position, suggesting that prolonging the conflict will have a negative impact on the conditions under which Ukraine will eventually face a peace process. According to the Interfax news agency, Russia continues to demonstrate a willingness to engage in dialogue, but its priorities, as defined by Russian authorities, are to achieve military objectives and protect what it considers Russia’s fundamental interests.
