On Friday night (11/14), at least three students of the Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Jardim Botanico (DF) were surrounded during a fire that destroyed the unit. One of them recorded a video during the incident.
In the recording, a young man is seen talking with two other students as they film a fire burning through the academy. “Everything is on fire,” he says, as his colleagues ask for the number of the fire department.
Later, while talking on the phone with the DF Military Fire Department (CBMDF), I heard what sounded like an explosion. The boy who filmed the scene commented, “Wow, that’s a mess.”
Finally, one of them asks, “There’s no fire extinguisher here, right?” Another student replies, “No, no.” However, it is unclear whether the troops were equipped.
One of the students shown in the image above is Filipe Firmino, 37, an administrator. He reported what he saw at the time of the fire.
“I was talking to two friends after training and they noticed smoke and saw the ceiling falling, so we tried to get out through the back window,” Firmino said.
The boys, who were still inside the gymnasium, realized that they could not get out through the windows and had to jump over the ceiling. “We said to each other, ‘Now we’re going to have to jump over the roof.’ The roof was so high that we couldn’t go down all at once, but we jumped down in three stages, one level at a time,” the student continues.
“The fire was going to spread quickly. If we didn’t decide what to do right away, we had to jump quickly.”

According to preliminary information, there were students, teachers and staff at the school at the time of the fire, but no one was injured. The CBMDF and military police (PMDF) were called.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes. Adelivaldo Cardoso, the botanical garden’s regional manager, was on the scene and monitored the military’s actions.
Two people were taken to the emergency room, Cardoso said. “One person was taken to hospital with heavy smoke inhalation. The owner of the facility next door was also very nervous and upset and had to go to the infirmary,” he said.
