The murder of Eloa Pimentel is remembered to this day as one of the most neglected criminal cases in this country. The kidnapping and murder of a 15-year-old teenager marked the country and prompted changes in laws related to violence against women.
Eloa was being held in a private prison in an apartment in Santo Andre, in the state of Sao Paulo, by her ex-girlfriend, Lindenberg Alves. A total of 100 hours of negotiations took place between the police and the kidnappers to avoid a tragic outcome.

One of the issues in this case is the fact that Eloa was having an affair with an older man. Lindenberg met Eloa when she was only 12 and he was 18. Their relationship was characterized by constant back-and-forth bickering and suffocating control.
Criminal lawyer Giovanna Guerra explains that this crime predates the definition of femicide as a qualified murder (Law no. 13,104 of 2015) and as an independent criminal category (Law no. 14,994 of 2024).
“This case therefore shows that the acts protected by this legal category were already occurring in a fairly serious manner, and that Eloa, despite being a victim of femicide, did not receive the institutional protection she deserved,” he emphasizes.

The expert said that the crime against Eloa Pimentel stimulated a discussion on gender violence and “provided a framework for thinking about so-called ‘murder for love,’ which is nothing less than murder for hate, possession and control.”
