Early Thursday morning brought news to La Plata, a symbol of hope and life at a time of low birth rates globally and locally. It was the birth of triplets Emma, Sophia, and Lucio.
This birth was not only a special family event for mother Valeria and father Ariel (Silva) from Los Hornos. The highly complex surgery, carried out at the Pratense Medical Institute, tested medical capabilities in a scenario considered “unusual” in which three premature babies were born at the same time.
The peculiarity of this birth lies in its composition. Experts say the Silva triplets are a “unique case in the city and state,” with a one-in-a-million chance of occurrence.
This is a case of twins and twins. Sisters Emma and Sophia share the same placenta and are classified as twins. The little boy Lucio developed in a separate compartment, so he is considered a sister twin.
This pregnancy was scientifically classified as dichorionic and triamniotic and lasted 30 weeks (7 1/2 months).
Challenges and containment in neonatology
The newborn weighs between 1,300 grams and 1,600 grams and is receiving close care in the neonatal ward.
They should be left in the incubator for about a month and a half to complete the maturation process and reach their optimal weight.
The management team of the Pratense Medical Institute, led by Dr. Raul Tassi and Dr. Guillermo Salas, Director of Intensive Care, provided the family with intensive support.
Within the framework of a complex triple birth, this institution emphasized a sense of humanity in the face of the combination of immaturity and fecundity.
Meanwhile, the Silva family of Los Hornos proved to be a great source of support, not only to the doctors but also to those closest to them. “We know it’s a big challenge and we have family and grandmother (Irma) to help us with that,” the parents said.
His maternal grandmother, Irma, is familiar to Los Hornos’ social circle and is a neighbor known for extremist activities. Additionally, she and her daughter share a passion for artisanal baking, which is known for its holiday sweet breads.
While the little warriors Sofía, Emma and Lucio continue to adapt to the world under the watchful eye of doctors, the family is already planning a Christmas “full of tears, diapers and joy”, celebrating the triple miracle that has arrived to double their happiness and the surprise of the whole of La Plata.
