This Saturday, thousands of people took part in a demonstration in Belem against the 30th United Nations Conference of the Parties against Climate Change (COP30), called by the People’s Summit under the motto “From the Amazon to the World: An End to Inequality and Environmental Racism.” Climate justice now.

The fifth day of the climate summit in Belém began with a march of activists, including indigenous people, outside the official premises, the newspaper Folha de São Paulo reported.

At the demonstration, international NGOs and artists from the Federal University of Pará staged a fossil fuel funeral using a giant coffin to demand a new era free from oil, gas and coal.

Another artistic montage is titled “Orange Plague” and features a sculpture of US President Donald Trump naked and perched on the shoulders of a worker.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has not escaped criticism after appearing to drink through a barrel of oil through a straw to criticize the approval of new oil exploration in the Amazon. Similarly, river privatization and mining development were criticized, and the Palestinian flag began to appear.

The march was attended by representatives of social movements from Kenya, the Philippines and Malaysia calling for climate justice and direct climate financing.

The Belen demonstration marks a resurgence of global marches against official environmental and ecological policies after three years in which COPs have been held in countries where freedom of expression is restricted, such as Azerbaijan, Dubai and Egypt.
