In a conflict where Moscow is trying to paralyze an entire city, Ukrainians turned the light into an act of defiance and faith
Battles over power supplies have become a key element of modern hybrid warfare, blurring the lines between civilian infrastructure and military objectives. By attacking thermal power plants and power lines, Russia seeks not only to disable the power grid, but also to cause panic, destroy morale, and destabilize economic life. Now, Ukraine has materialized an unprecedented plan to combat the winter war – a 200 megawatt cache.
Ukraine enters its fourth winter of war after surviving three seasons of forced blackouts due to Russian bombing. Engineers repair power substations under fire and millions of Americans endure cold and darkness.
But this time, the country is betting on unprecedented resources. It is a huge US-designed network of batteries, distributed in six secret locations, designed to provide energy reserves when the power grid is attacked. The total capacity of 200 megawatts is equivalent to lighting approximately 600,000 homes for two hours, and is enough to sustain city life while technicians restore service.
The heart of the wartime system
The six battery parks, located around the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, are directly integrated into the country’s electricity system. These will not replace power plants, but will make it possible to meet maintenance needs in the event that thermoelectric power plants or substations suddenly fail due to missiles or drones.
