In 2018, there was debate over where Lula should serve his sentence. They placed him in solitary confinement at the Curitiba Federal Police. He was alone in a room with a bed, a table, and a bathroom. He could not leave her and had to knock on the door to communicate with the guards.
Seven years later, Lula was acquitted by the Supreme Court, elected President of the Republic, and set up two palaces in Brasilia. The issue has flared up again with the arrest of Jair Bolsonaro. He was under house arrest and sentenced to 27 years in prison by the STF.
Minister Alexandre de Moraes appears willing to test the prisoner, who is in his 70s and whose health and nerves are in jeopardy. He was sent to a light facility at Papuda Prison. You wouldn’t do that to a former president. For those who dislike Bolsonaro, the right wing will be too light. Those who prefer former captains should serve their sentences at home, like former President Fernando Collor.
In any case, like Lula, Brazil should look to the example France set for the world by imprisoning former president Philippe Pétain. He was an octogenarian field marshal who took over dictatorial powers after the 1940 German invasion. It was a typical treason charge, and he was sentenced to death. He was placed in a fortress and given a room with a small chamber attached. Pétain died of natural causes there in 1951.
Bolsonaro is a former president of the republic who came to power by popular vote. Something is wrong when he risks being sent into a routine similar to that of the usurped collaborationist marshal.
Candidate Flavio
Flavio Bolsonaro is a candidate for the President of the Republic. Like all opposition candidates, his main opponent is Tarcisio de Freitas, the governor of São Paulo state, who has said he is seeking re-election.
