Michael Duarte, a popular food influencer known for his recipe videos, passed away on November 8th at the age of 39 in Texas.

His death was confirmed by his talent agency, Aloom Media Group, in an Instagram post the following day. A GoFundMe page, which was also shared by Alooma, cited a “terrible accident” as the cause of Duarte’s death and said he died while on a trip to Texas.

“Please include Michael’s family in your prayers during this extremely difficult time,” the fundraiser’s description reads. “This tragedy happened without warning, and Jessica (his wife) ended up paying for the cost of bringing him back to California and paying for his funeral.”

The author, known online by the username “FoodWithBearHands,” was shot by police and later pronounced dead at a hospital, a spokesperson for the Medina County Sheriff’s Office told TMZ.

In Castroville, Texas, police officers responded to a 911 call about a disturbance involving a “male carrying a knife and acting suspiciously.” Local news reports said the officer fired two shots from her service weapon, hitting Michael.

Duarte had more than 2 million followers on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. On social media, he shared cooking videos and recipes, especially barbecue videos.

“Michael was more than his job. A proud father who lit up every time he talked about his daughter. A devoted husband whose love for his family was at the center of everything he did. A good man with a generous heart, whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met,” a post on his Instagram account read.

“No one can replace someone like Michael. His loss leaves a space that can never be filled, but his spirit, energy, passion and creativity will always be a part of us,” they wrote in announcing his death.

This influencer grew up in Calipatria, California, a small town near the US-Mexico border. At the age of 14, he started working at his uncle’s Mexican restaurant. In an Instagram post, he called his uncle his “master” and revealed how he learned to cook there.
