Former President Jair Bolsonaro has asked the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, to approve the visit of Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro. In a request submitted by his lawyers, Bolsonaro said the talks should be held “as soon as possible” on an unspecified date to allow direct dialogue between the two sides.
“The purpose of the request is to allow a specific personal meeting to be held on a timely arranged date, preferably as early as possible, as it is necessary to interact directly with the petitioner,” Bolsonaro’s defenders said.
Mr Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since August, and all his visits must be approved by Mr Moraes, who is also responsible for deciding when to visit.
Claudio Castro is from the same party (PL) as Bolsonaro, and although he is not part of the hardcore, he circles around the former president’s family clan.
At the end of October, the governor was responsible for launching a large-scale police operation against Comando Vermelho in communities in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, resulting in the deaths of 121 people. Rio’s Public Ministry said the targets were leaders who had expanded their faction’s territory and harbored criminals from other states.
