Belém – The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) took on a bit of a “pop” side this week with the appearance of actor Alfonso Herrera. A former member of RBD, the Mexican band made famous by the melodrama of the same name, he participated on a panel discussing refugee solutions.
The topic comes from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). “It’s incredible to be able to share this with the High Commissioner. Thank you, Filippo Grandi, for your hard work, good energy and the pleasure of this panel discussion on climate change,” Afonso said, referring to the international organization’s commissioner.
In an Instagram post, the actor said he was “deeply inspired” by meeting refugee and indigenous communities affected by extreme weather during COP30 in Brazil. He said these stories reminded him that “the climate crisis is about people” and that displaced people are among those hardest hit.
“Their stories remind me that the climate crisis is a people issue, and that displaced communities are the ones most affected. That is why I am here to help share the stories of the indigenous communities and refugees I have met through my work as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador,” he wrote.

Ms. Herrera has served as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador for seven years, visiting Uganda, Ukraine, and other countries marked by conflict and forced displacement due to the climate crisis.
