Bolsonarismo repeats SC due to stalemate by DF Senate

The Senate, which will be a focus for Bolsonarism in next year’s elections, has seen early competition among political groups to secure a spot in the election. After the state of Santa Catarina, where the entry of Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) “disturbed” the local situation, the Federal District also has three right-wing names seeking former President Jair Bolsonaro’s blessing. On Tuesday night, Deputy Bia Kitsis (PL-DF), with the support of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and former First Lady Michel, announced her candidacy and hinted that she would win for the PL. However, Governor Ibanez Rocha (MDB) has indicated his desire to occupy one of the “double” seats with the former first lady.

The dispute is similar to the impasse in Santa Catarina state, where Rio city councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) has intensified the right-wing race for a seat in the Senate race. The fight is being led by Federal Rep. Carol de Toni (PL-SC) and Sen. Esperidian Amin (PP-SC), the latter supported by Governor Jorginho Melo (PL). Amin’s agreement with the PP aims to guarantee Jorginho more TV time and the status of one of the state’s most experienced politicians, but the conservative election leaves only one spot for the PL, which will pit the former president’s son against Carol de Toni.

At the start of his candidacy, Kitsis said he had “taken this step” not only because voters had asked him to, but also because he “respected the leadership” of the party and had Michel’s support.

— It is a journey through a courageous Senate built by courageous men and women who will do what must be done to ensure that the great powers go back to the design of the Constitution and that we finally have justice in this country.

In her speech, Michele recalled the 100 days her husband was incarcerated and the fact that he was unable to speak publicly.

— Thank you for this support to our highest-voting member. She certainly has great projects for our federal district through this seat (Senate). Let’s fight to elect Sen. Bea Kitsis. Ladies, react. Young people, react. “Innocent people are in prison,” he said.

Another person who mentioned the former president was Flavio, who hugged Kitsis and led a chorus of “Go back, Bolsonaro”. Valdemar Costa Neto also expressed support for the congressman, defining the event on social media as “a promising night for the right” and “a step towards victory”. The PL president confessed that he was “surprised” to see “so many good people” attending the presentation. The event was attended by Senators Izarsi Lucas (PL-DF), Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), Márcio Vitar (PL-AC), Federal Deputy Alberto Fraga (PL-DF), and former Minister of Health and candidate for the Senate of Paraiba Marcelo Queiroga (PL-PB).

Before Bea Kitsis’s candidacy, another right-wing name has been added to the list of people considered to be running for the two Senate seats. Rumors about his candidacy were reignited in July when Michel revealed on social media the new electoral titles associated with the federal district transferred to Rio. “The good girl is back home, once again a voter in Brasilia,” she wrote. A week earlier, she denied there was an agreement to run in the Senate election in partnership with Ibanez Rocha. The position was made after the governor met with Bolsonaro and Michel on the birthday of Evangelical Bishop JB Carvalho.

According to information from the Metropolis portal, Ibanez claims to have discussed the Senate agreement with the former first lady, and she says the conversations are progressing. Michelle denied the possibility of an agreement online, saying, “The photo that was released was taken at Bishop JB’s home to celebrate his birthday, and not at a political meeting.”

As Carlos Bolsonaro and Carol de Toni vie for a Senate seat, Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Melo (PL) has not publicly spoken out about the impasse. The governor, a key stakeholder in the issue, has been accused by Bolsonarians of supporting Sen. Esperidian Amin, who is running for re-election on the People’s Party, which has only one vacant seat. At the same time, over the weekend he publicly praised state deputy Ana Campagnolo, one of the party’s main critics of Carlos’ candidacy.

At the end of October, Carlos called Ana Campagnolo a “liar” when she explained to supporters that Jorginho’s deal was a negotiation between PL itself and PP, and that councilors would take Carroll’s seat from Toni. But Bolsonaristas have accused Jorginho of violating the new agreement. In a video released on Saturday, Federal Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) said that it was a “sledgehammer” for his father to be able to nominate Carlos to one of the vacancies, without mentioning the governor. The lawmaker said a possible “withdrawal” could be seen as a defeat for the former president and an invitation to other politicians to “revolt” and stop following orders and agreements signed with the party’s main leadership.

Due to the development of the Santa Catarina PL crisis and the silence of Jorginho Melo, the governor’s social networks became the subject of criticism from his supporters, who noted their “disappointment” in not supporting the candidacy of Carlos Bolsonaro. Another public criticism came from Sao Paulo state lawmaker Hil Diniz (PL), who called for “an explanation from Bolsonaro’s supporters as to why they have exhausted Bolsonaro so much” by the lack of definition.
