This Wednesday, an administrative action taken by the Los Angeles Lakers caused a stir in the NBA. Star LeBron James has been officially assigned to the South Bay Lakers, an affiliate team of the main team in the NBA’s developmental league, the G League.

The news, announced by American ESPN journalist Shams Charania, does not mean a demotion or dismissal, but rather the final step in the rehabilitation process for the 40-year-old player, who is recovering from a sciatic nerve injury.
LeBron missed the start of the season due to back pain, which coach J.J. Redick initially described as “inflammation of a nerve in his hip.” Further tests confirmed the diagnosis of sciatica, a condition that causes pain that radiates from the spine to the legs.
Charania said the designation was both logistical and technical in nature, allowing No. 23 to get back into rhythm and participate in intense 5-on-5 workouts that were unusual for the main team’s routine during the regular season.
“Lakers’ LeBron James was assigned to the NBA G League affiliate South Bay today and will participate in his first full workout of the season, including 5-on-5 games, in preparation for his potential debut,” Charania reported.
Barring any new symptoms, LeBron is expected to return to the court later this month.
