Madrid, November 13 (Europe Press) –
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio specified that President Donald Trump’s White House order to restart nuclear tests includes the use of “launch systems,” adding that the U.S. government wants to make sure the tests are “functional” and “safe.”
“President Trump’s approach to testing our nuclear capabilities, including nuclear delivery systems, is on par with what other countries around the world are doing,” he said. “We need to make sure these work and are safe,” he said, without providing further details.
Following a wave of international criticism of White House Tennant’s words, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright suggested in early November that these tests would not involve a “nuclear explosion” and clarified that the tests would be limited to “systems tests.”
According to Russia’s Tass news agency, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov said the Russian government viewed Rubio’s words as “confirmation that the United States will withdraw from the moratorium on (nuclear) testing.”
“This is a confirmation of these intentions,” he said, noting that Russia had already warned that it would “respond appropriately” if the United States conducted a nuclear test, which Trump argued was necessary given that Russia and China have secretly conducted “nuclear tests” without providing evidence to support these claims.
Therefore, North Korea is the only country to have conducted this type of test in recent decades. The United States, Russia, and China have not conducted a nuclear test since the Chinese government conducted one in 1996. Russia imposed a moratorium on nuclear weapons in 1990 and the United States in 1992 under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty.
