Census reveals Brazilians called picanha, farofa and pizza – 2025/11/13 – Cozinha Bruta

Last week I was abducted by the IBGE website “Nome’s Brazil”.

For those who didn’t live up to the hype, they’ve launched a platform that uses data collected from the last census to search for the most common Brazilian names, and even the weirdest.

After playing around with the names of relatives and friends, came the really fun part of typing random words into the search field and seeing what comes up.

There are 43 Brazilians named Nome. 1,726 people’s last name is their last name.

In the case of another 3,734 sibs, whose parents decided to name them simply “Son,” the incidence was particularly high in Roraima. The same state also has a high incidence of women called daughters, with 2,747 across the country and an average age of 6 years.

The platform also highlights mistakes made by store workers and parents of people with strange names.

There are 1,132 young people born after 2000 with the first name Fofia on their ID. Questions remain. Did the mother tell the father to register the child as “Sophia with PH”?

But let’s consider the most important thing in this column. Many people in Brazil have food-related names (mainly surnames).

For example, you can gather these people together for a nice barbecue. In fact, there are 24 people in São Paulo with the surname Chulas. The Picanha family has 32 members and the Farofa family has 135 gauchos. Accordingly, 175 cell buses were distributed among RS, SP and RJ.

A similar thing happens with the surname Pizza (948 people). Also listed on the menu were 62 women named Margherita and their families: Calabresa (84), Atum (37), Napolitana (26), Toscana (587), and Brigadeiro (131).

Stir-fry the peppers and tomatoes. Cool in an airtight bag and remove the skin. Discard the pepper seeds.
