The Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPDF) announced this Thursday (November 13) that the Concentration and Reeducation Center (CIR) at Papuda Prison cannot house prisoners over the age of 60. This information was released amid expectations that former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who was sentenced to 27 years in prison, would be released from house arrest and enter a closed government.
An inspection conducted by the Public Defender’s Office in Blocks 5 and 6 of Papda CIR on November 6 found problems related to food provided, lack of basic hygiene and ventilation materials, and delays in providing medical care to sick people.
Additionally, each cell in the elderly block houses 38 people, with only 21 beds available in each cell. Jair Bolsonaro is 70 years old.
At the end of the inspection, the Public Defender’s Office recommended that the Prison Management Secretariat (Seape-DF) take action to curb overcrowding through measures such as early release and increased system progression. It was also recommended to strengthen reintegration policies and strengthen the workforce, particularly criminal police officers and medical professionals.
For general public defender Celestino Chupel, the scenario uncovered during the inspection is alarming. “It is the role of the public defender’s office to ensure that the dignity of people who have been deprived of their liberty is guaranteed. At the moment, prisons cannot accommodate any elderly people,” he argued.
