Artist unions from seven states issued a joint statement in defense of Taís Araujo and in response to a statement from Sated-RJ President Hugo Gross. The group said it does not support speech that downplays or denies systemic racism, and accused the director of attacking the actress after she filed a complaint with Globo’s compliance department.
The reaction came after it was revealed that Tice had filed a complaint with the compliance department over a disagreement with original author Manuela Díaz over the direction of the soap opera’s character Raquel. According to F5, the actress sought to contribute to the discussion about black representation in the station’s productions.

The union also stressed that its role is to “protect workers” and not to criminalize reporting of misconduct. “It is the responsibility of representative bodies to foster dialogue and social change, not to reinforce prejudicial narratives or relativize the suffering of their representatives,” they said.
The Memorandum of Understanding is signed by the Rio de Janeiro Dance Professional Federation (SPD-RJ), as well as the sateds of São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Pernambuco and Paraiba.

Theis’ charges against Manuela Diaz
According to Folha de São Paulo newspaper, Tais Araujo contacted author Manuela Díaz in August to discuss the direction of the character Raquel in Vali Tudo. She reportedly expressed displeasure at the fact that yet another black woman was depicted in the midst of so much suffering, and filed a lawsuit with Globo’s compliance department to encourage a discussion about representation.
The dialogue ended in disagreement. Manuela disagreed with the criticism and filed a complaint against Theis with the station’s compliance department. Tice publicly voiced his dissatisfaction with the character’s production in Quem magazine in August, claiming that the creator violated the company’s code of ethics.
The actress reported the demands from the black movement, which she is a part of, and said that the black movement was disappointed in the execution of the conspiracy. Manuela would have been concerned about the fact that the actress brought racial issues into the discussion. She is the author of the film Mares (released in October), which depicts the Mares Rebellion, the largest revolt of enslaved people in the history of this country.
Sated-RJ’s reaction
In an interview with Metropoles, Hugo Gross emphasized that he did not believe there was any racial persecution in the incident, saying, “It’s nothing to say that black people didn’t have a chance today.”
“They’re complaining about black people because black people didn’t have a role. You can say anything today, but black people just didn’t have a chance. Valitud had three black protagonists. We have to stop that. That’s not how life works. Every little thing is like, ‘Oh, black people don’t have a say.’ No one thinks like that anymore. It’s already happened millions of years ago,” he said.

The union president also defended Globo for giving more space to black artists. According to UERJ research, between 1994 and 2014, only 10% of the lead characters on the network’s soap operas were black. In 2023, for the first time, every new soap opera released has a black protagonist.
“Globo is making black people work harder than they should! There was always a chance for that, but today is even better. Sated’s understanding is that you have to accept what the author is doing. Actors have to act and appreciate, yeah, with that humility,” Gross said.
He also took a stand against racial inclusion movements, declaring that persecution had no place in the art world.
“We have to stop humanizing this narrative of anything being black. Today there is a movement that supports this thing that shouldn’t exist because black and white people are all the same. Nothing happens (within compliance). There’s no racial persecution. People don’t have a gender or a skin color. He brings joy and makes you think. And above all, humility!
