On the 6th, the stepfather of a 13-year-old girl in Santa Catarina state was arrested on suspicion of rape after she tried to register her baby.
The complaint was filed by the Registrar’s Office of the Municipality of Valle de Itajái. This incident was discovered on Monday this week (10)
Local experts realized that she was under the legal age of consent, 14, and contacted the Public Ministry of Santa Catarina, which asked civilian police to investigate the case.
During the investigation, police concluded that the girl had been sexually abused by her stepfather and that the baby was the result of rape, which was proven through DNA testing.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the girl’s mother tolerated and ignored the abuse by her husband and lied to police, saying she had been assaulted at the school she attended. According to the group, this interpretation was rejected after a joint investigation between the guardianship council and the school.
The public prosecutor’s office also requested the temporary revocation of the mother’s parental rights.
The young woman began receiving psychological support and was sent to a social protection facility with her baby.
“Our priority was to break the cycle of silence and violence and guarantee the safety, acceptance and support of young people and children,” Patricia Kastelem Strebe, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said in a statement.
This procedure is kept secret from the court.
