Powerwall 2 is a residential energy storage unit integrated with a solar panel system.to store electricity for self-consumption, shift usage to periods of lower cost, and provide backup energy in case of grid failure.
This defect is caused by certain lithium-ion battery cells that can overheat, smoke, or catch fire under certain conditions. In some cases, the defect caused property damage, according to the recall notice.
Tesla said it is remotely restricting charging of affected units to minimize risk while providing free replacements to customers.
The recall focuses attention on Tesla’s battery cell suppliers, and comes as energy storage plays a growing role in the company’s expansion beyond electric vehicles.
