Jakarta (ANTARA) – The availability of fuel oil (BBM) in several areas is now starting to be limited. This condition requires drivers to be wiser in using fuel to be more economical.
Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, an automotive expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), suggests some simple steps to save fuel consumption, one of which is to maintain the vehicle’s speed and avoid the habit of braking suddenly. According to him, small efforts like this could be a good start in preventing fuel waste.
“American research Environmental Protection Agency “shows that aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding and sudden braking can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 33% on toll roads and 5% in cities,” Yannes said on Monday (22/9).
So, what driving methods can help your car save more fuel? Here are some tips that can be applied.

Effective driving methods to save fuel
1. Use air conditioning wisely
Air conditioning is important to ensure comfort while driving. However, its use can overload the engine and affect fuel consumption. It’s best not to turn on the air conditioning right away when the car is still hot. Open the windows first to let the air out, then once the cabin feels cool, close the windows and turn on the air conditioning.
2. Maintain a constant speed
Driving at a constant speed makes the engine lighter and therefore fuel consumption is more efficient. Avoid the habit of accelerating or changing speed suddenly so that fuel use remains efficient.
3. Avoid sudden braking
Sudden braking makes the engine and fuel work harder. To be more economical, brake softly and evenly. Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front to reduce the risk of having to brake suddenly.
4. Reduce excess load
Carrying too many objects or heavy loads will make the engine work harder and fuel consumption will increase. Try to bring only the items you really need.

5. Routine car maintenance
Regular maintenance helps maintain optimal engine performance and prevents fuel waste. Routine maintenance ensures that fuel lines and engine components are always in the best condition.
6. Turn off the engine while waiting
If you wait a long time in a parking lot or stop without a clear purpose, it is better to turn off the engine. Keeping the engine running when the car is stationary only wastes fuel.
7. Check engine speed
The ideal rpm is usually between 1,500 and 2,500. To save fuel in a car, by controlling the number of revolutions (engine revolutions per minute), control the pressure of the car engine in a stable and low state. This method is more effective in reducing fuel consumption to keep it light and economical.
8. Pay attention to tire pressure
Tires with lower air pressure create more friction, so the engine has to work harder. Make sure your tire pressure meets the recommendations so that fuel consumption is more economical and makes your journey more comfortable.
