Madrid November 14 (Europe Press) –
At least 57 people were killed and another 65 injured in an armed attack on Friday in South Sudan’s Balliet district in Upper Nile state in Africa’s far northeast.
In a statement to Radio Tamazzi, Balliet Chief Joseph Deng said the armed group launched the attack at dawn, just after 5:30 a.m. (local time), opening fire on residents of Adon Payam.
“Today a tragic situation occurred in Adon. We continue to search for the missing persons,” he declared, adding that “criminal elements” had entered Bariet from neighboring Ulan and Nasir governorates.
Dengo explained that the attackers took over 5,300 cattle and residents were evacuated from the area. He further asserted that security forces had been on alert for several weeks, but were surprised by the scale and timing of the attack.
