Teatro Experimental do Negro, a fundamental initiative in Brazilian performing arts, has a book chronicling its journey, first published in 1966 and now republished in partnership with Edisoes Sesc and Perspectiva.
The new edition of the book is being coordinated by researcher Jesse Oliveira and Elisa Larkin Nascimento, president of Ipiafro and widow of Abdias Nascimento, a key figure in TEN.
The original book is supplemented by a photo essay by José Medeiros and what the editors call the “testimony and resonance” of a theater initiative commemorating the 80th anniversary of the 1945 premiere.
The book includes writings by intellectuals such as Abdias’s contemporaries Guerreiro Ramos, Desio de Almeida Prado, Nelson Rodríguez, Augusto Boal, and Florestán Fernández. In addition to being an actor and playwright, Florestán Fernández was also one of the great figures of black Brazilian thought.
Some of the new authors who wrote text for this edition include director Aldri Annunciação, Eugenio Lima, and Clayton Nascimento.
As part of the FlinkSampa program, a launch event will be held at Sesc Pompeia this Sunday (16th) at 3pm.
