At least three students of Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu at Jardim Botanico (DF) reported feeling tense during a fire that destroyed a bar in Santa Fe on Friday night, November 14th. The gym is behind the bar. One of them recorded a video during the incident.
In the recording, a young man is seen talking to two other students as fire hits the outside of the gymnasium. “Everything is on fire,” he says, as his colleagues ask for the number of the fire department.
Later, while talking on the phone with the DF Military Fire Department (CBMDF), I heard what sounded like an explosion. The boy who filmed the scene commented, “Wow, that’s a mess.”
Finally, one of them asks, “There’s no fire extinguisher here, right?” Another student replies, “No, no.” However, it is unclear whether the troops were equipped.
One of the students shown in the image above is Filipe Firmino, 37, an administrator. He reported what he saw at the time of the fire.
“I was talking to two friends after training when they noticed smoke and saw the ceiling fall. Then they tried to get out through the back window,” Firmino said.
The boys, who were still inside the gymnasium, realized that they could not get out through the windows and had to jump over the ceiling. “We said to each other, ‘Now we’re going to have to jump over the roof.’ The roof was so high that we couldn’t go down all at once, but we jumped down in three stages, one level at a time,” the student continues.
“The fire was going to spread quickly. If we didn’t decide what to do right away, we had to jump quickly.”
Despite images and reports from students reporting tension inside the gymnasium, CBMDF Lt. Ebel Silva and Gracie Barra owner Janaina Lopez said the gymnasium was not engulfed by flames.

There were students and teachers in the gymnasium at the time of the fire, but no one was injured. The CBMDF and military police (PMDF) were called.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes. “One person was taken (to hospital) for observation, but it appears that his injuries are not serious,” CBMDF Lieutenant Edel Silva declared. “No one was burned.”
“The fire was quickly extinguished. The main objective was to prevent it from spreading to other environments,” he added.
These facilities will be inspected by CBMDF to determine the cause of the fire. DF Civil Defense was also called in.
