The conduct of the trial for Angela Diniz’s murder in the late 1970s continues to provoke outrage decades later. Even though 47 years have passed, one of the theses used by the defense to guarantee a light sentence for the murderer, the so-called legitimate defense of honor, officially ceased to exist only in 2023, when the STF banned its use in any context of Brazilian justice.
The case was brought back to the spotlight with the premiere of Angela Diniz: Assassinada e Condenada, a new series on HBO Max inspired by the Praia dos Ossos podcast. This film revisits the crime and exposes the most controversial aspects of the trial of Raul “Doca” Street, Angela’s boyfriend at the time of her murder.

The paper was used in the Angela Diniz case.
Legitimate honor defense was a legal strategy to reduce the sentence of a man who murdered his partner. The paper argued that perpetrators react to “defend their honor” and often rely on ideas of jealousy, betrayal, or behavior considered “blameable” on the part of the victim.
In Angela’s case, this story directly influenced the outcome of the first Doka Street trial, which resulted in a sentence of only two years. During the trial, the thesis strategy was revealed when the defendant claimed that he was “controlled by uncontrollable passions” while incriminating Angela.
Socialite Angela Diniz was murdered by her boyfriend in 1976.

After the conviction, the movement announced the motto “Never kill a loved one”, which became a symbol of the fight against impunity and gender-based violence.
Public pressure over the incident led to the reopening of the case against Doka Street. He went to the docks in 1981 and was eventually sentenced to 15 years in prison for manslaughter with intent to kill. Of this sentence, he served approximately three years in a closed system, two years in a semi-public system, and the rest was released on parole.
Despite being considered misogynistic, the treatise permeated Brazilian courts for decades and played a decisive role in many femicide cases. It was in 2023 that the Federal Supreme Court (STF) declared the paper unconstitutional, banning its use and saying it violates fundamental rights such as equality, dignity and life.
