At least 22 people were injured in a violent explosion that caused a fire in an industrial park south of Argentina’s capital Ezeiza on Friday (14th), authorities and local media reported.
“The explosions and fires that are happening in different industries are huge,” Gastón Granados, the mayor of Ezeiza, told the C5N channel.
Television footage showed images of smoke and some of the explosions recorded in the municipality of Aires province.
“The windows in my house and in my neighborhood exploded,” Granados, who lives about 500 meters from the industrial area known as Spegazzini Polygon, told C5N.
The mayor reiterated, “The situation was so bad that we are removing families who live nearby.”
Carlos Santoro, director of the hospital where the injured were taken, told La Nación + that 22 people had arrived at the scene to receive treatment.
Santoro explained that the hospital received a man who had suffered a heart attack and a pregnant woman who was intoxicated. Both are in intensive care.
Mayor Granados said so far the cause of the explosion was unknown. “We are trying to control it and eliminate it, but we have not yet succeeded.”
Local media said at least five factories were affected.
This industrial park is close to Ezeiza International Airport, the largest airport in Argentina’s capital, and is home to a variety of industries.
“Different companies offer different products. There is an important tire warehouse, there is a chemical company, there is an Iron Mountain warehouse (document storage). This is a very complex fire and it will be a long fire,” Buenos Aires provincial civil defense director Fabian García told La Nación + early this Saturday (15th).
“The location of the fire was a logistics company,” Garcia added.
One of the access roads to the scene was closed as a precaution while around 20 fire teams were on the scene, local media outlet La Nación confirmed.
